World Cup: Chile avoids potential elimination

ChileRangers of Chile launched a lawsuit, which may have caused major issues for Chilean soccer. The national team’s attendance at the World Cup in South Africa in 2014 was in jeopardy, but the club abandoned the complaint.

Rangers had argued in court that it should not have been demoted from Chile’s top league. After it was discovered that the team had used six foreign players in a league game on November 8, the club was demoted to the second tier.

FIFA, the organization that oversees the game of football, threatened to exclude Chile from the World Cup until Rangers dropped the legal action.

The team’s status in the first division was lost due to the three-point punishment, and the club appealed the decision by filing a lawsuit last week.

The club, however, abandoned the claim when FIFA threatened to exclude Chile from the World Cup.

Only sports arbitration panels, not civil courts, should hear FIFA disputes.

Chile last participated in a World Cup in France in 1998.

Much is expected of Chile in South Africa after they placed second in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
