In the second leg of the final at the Santa Laura stadium in Santiago on Wednesday, Colo Colo defeated rivals Universidad Catolica 4-2 to win the Chilean Clausura championship. It was Colo Colo’s 29th championship victory.
Hugo Tocalli’s team dominated their opponents and generated several chances for goals despite Catolica taking the lead just one minute after the game began on Rodrigo Valenzuela’s strike.
In the 13th minute, Charles Aranguiz equalized for Colo Colo with a superb header that beat Catolica goalkeeper Paulo Garces.
Colo Esteban Paredes’ conversion gave Colo the lead in the 32nd minute, but Roberto Gutierrez’s goal for Catolica tied the score in the 65th.
However, two minutes later Paredes gave Colo Colo the lead again, and one minute before the end Cristian Bogado pushed the outcome beyond Catolica’s grasp, giving Colo Colo a 4-2 victory and effectively the championship.
The first leg of the championship match finished in a 2-2 tie, although Colo Colo ultimately proved to be the stronger team on Catolica’s home ground in the second leg.
Colo Colo are the most successful team in Chilean football history, having won 26 championships. Universidad de Chile and Universidad Catolica follow them, each with 13 and 9 championships, respectively.
