After 40 years, Uruguay advances to the World Cup quarterfinals

Suarez advanced Uruguay to the semifinals

In what was arguably the most exciting game of the tournament thus far, Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1 to go to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in forty years. Luis Suarez’s two superb goals gave the Uruguayans the victory in the game.

Suarez gave Uruguay the lead in the eighth minute by meeting a fantastic cross from the left wing of Diego Forlan with a powerful goal from a tight angle while playing in pouring rain.

When Oscar Tabarez’s team shifted to the offensive, they continued to play excellent football and appeared to be quite threatening.

However, as the first half went on, Uruguay sat back in defense and let the South Koreans press their advantage.

The Asians overpowered their opponents after the interval, and it appeared as though they would soon tie the game.

South Korea finally equalized in the 68th minute after heavy pressure after Uruguay failed to stop a dangerous cross, allowing Lee Chung-yong to beat Fernando Muslera with a superb header.

Ten minutes from the finish, Suarez outran two players and curled a right-footed drive off the post from the outside of the box to give Uruguay the lead. The contest then took an unexpected turn as Uruguay upped their game.

Dong-Gook Lee had a fantastic opportunity to draw the game for South Korea in the 87th minute, but a Uruguayan defender knocked his shot off the goal line. The game continued at a frenzied tempo.

The two-time world winners Uruguay have not advanced to this World Cup since 1970. They will play either Ghana or the United States in the quarterfinals, both of whom play on Saturday.
