Boca defeats San Lorenzo, and Estudiantes win in Argentina


After a poor Argentine Clausura tournament in which they never got going, Boca Juniors earned a much-needed 2-0 victory over Buenos Aires rivals San Lorenzo at the Bombonera stadium on Sunday. The result gave the squad some breathing room. Only their fourth victory in 16 games, Boca was propelled by the talent of playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, who returned from injury.


Matias Gimenez, a midfielder for Boca, scored the first goal in the fourth minute with a powerful header off of a Riquelme corner kick.


Martin Palermo’s powerful first-time strike that increased Boca’s advantage in the 71st minute came from Riquelme once more.


Despite their disagreements, both players hugged during the goal celebration. One of the two players is reportedly leaving the team for the upcoming season, according to persistent rumors.


With the victory, Boca improved to 15th, two spots ahead of River Plate, who remained in 17th.


After defeating Gimnasia de La Plata 3-1, Argentinos Juniors climbed into second position. An international player from Paraguay Nestor Ortigoza converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute to give the La Paternal team the lead.


Gimnasia was leveled by Lucas Castro in the 68th minute, but Argentinos went on to win with two goals from Ismael Sosa and Santiago Raymonda.


At the Cilindro de Avellaneda stadium, Racing Club maintained their winning streak by defeating Banfield by a score of 2-0. Claudio Bieler and Matias Martinez scored goals in the second half to give La Academia the win.


With 33 points, La Plata students are in first place in the Clausura standings. At Quilmes’ stadium on Saturday, they defeated River Plate 1-0 to earn their tenth victory of the year.
