Guillermo Barros Schelotto, an offensive midfielder for the Columbus Crew, has opted to continue playing football and, as a result, has declined the chance to take over as coach of Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors, the club’s president Jorge Amor Ameal revealed. As a result, “El Mellizo” has been abandoned while the search for Boca’s next coach is ongoing.
“Guillermo Barros Schelotto informed us that continuing to play football was his passion when we chatted with him on Friday. We grasp him and we understand him,” Ameal said to Canal 7.
Even though many people thought he had the expertise necessary for such a tough post, there were a lot of talks that Guillermo might break his contract with Columbus to become the permanent coach of Boca.
Guillermo, 36, acknowledged his pleasure at being viewed as the leading contender to take over the coaching position, but he also made it clear that he is content in his current position at Columbus and is eager to continue assisting the team in achieving success in Major League Soccer.
Guillermo was named league MVP in 2008 after leading Columbus to the MLS Cup and two MLS Supporters’ Shields since his 2007 arrival.
Boca will have to continue their hunt for a new coach to compete in the Argentine Apertura title the following season as a result of his decision.
