Brazil: Santos defeats Sao Paulo to go to the final


In front of over 40,000 spectators on Sunday at the Morumbi stadium, storied Brazilian team Santos defeated Sao Paulo 3-2 in the first leg of the Sao Paulo State championship semi-finals. The Peixe may advance to the tournament’s grand final, the most significant of Brazil’s regional competitions, with just a point from the second leg at the Vila Belmiro the following weekend.


At the Eduardo Jose Farah stadium, Santo Andre defeated Gremio Prudente in the other semifinal after coming from behind. Santo André is likewise within one point from the deciding factor.


In the last seconds, Durval stole the win away from Rogerio Ceni with a close-range header from a free-kick. After goals by the striker Andre and an own goal by Sao Paulo’s Cesar, Santos led by two goals going into the half.


Despite having Marlos dismissed, Sao Paulo improved in the second period and tied the score on goals from Hernanes and Dagoberto.


However, Santos overcame the setback and collected themselves at the finish of the game. They were rewarded for their attitude with a thrilling victory when Durval headed in a free kick that was taken by midfielder Madson.


Robinho, a Brazilian international who has bolstered Santos this year, is expected to help them win the Sao Paulo State title for the first time since 2007.

Flamengo defeated Vasco da Gama 2-1 in the Rio de Janeiro State Championship with to goals from attacker Vagner Love in either half. Flamengo must now defeat Botafogo in the Rio Cup final on Sunday to go to the tournament’s grand final when they will face Botafogo once more as the Guanabara Cup champions.


Saturday at the Maracana stadium, Botafogo defeated Fluminense 3-2 to earn a spot in the championship game.
