Transfers: Flamengo start talks with Riquelme

Vice-president of Flamengo Marco Braz said that talks for the player’s move to Brazil’s most popular club have already begun with the agency of Boca Juniors midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme. Braz has been negotiating for a potential transfer of Riquelme since Flamengo made an approach to take him over a month ago.

The directors of Flamengo are aware that retaining Riquelme’s rights won’t be simple, but because they are not expected to keep hold of the highly compensated attackers Adriano and Vagner Love, Riquelme will have an opportunity. With Adriano and Vagner Love gone, Flamengo will have enough money on hand to cover the Argentines’ salaries.

The 31-year-old Riquelme is aware that his time at Boca is limited, not only because of an ongoing disagreement with teammate Martin Palermo but also because he has alienated the club’s fervent supporters, known as “La Doce,” who are known for actively deciding which players represent the team and which ones do not.

The playmaker’s Boca contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and as a result, he has garnered the interest of numerous teams, some of whom are prepared to break the bank in order to capture his services. Several teams from Mexico and Europe, as well as Flamengo’s bitter rival Fluminense, have indicated interest in the youngster.

The new coach of Boca might also have an impact on Riquelme’s future. Guillermo Barros Schelotto was clear that he would not consider Riquelme if hired earlier this week when he turned down the chance to coach Boca.
