Penarol wins the Clausura championship in Uruguay

Penarol won the Uruguayan Clausura Championship on Saturday after defeating Fenix 2-1 after coming from behind. After surviving an early scare, the partisan audience of 50,000 spectators at the Centenario stadium went on to celebrate a title victory and Penarol’s eleventh straight win of the season. When the team plays their bitter rivals Nacional the next weekend, they will be trying to keep the party going.

When Matias Mier pounced on a strong through ball and finished expertly beyond Penarol goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa, Fenix unexpectedly seized the lead.

After many rebounded shots in the Fenix area, Argentine attacker Alejandro Martinuccio leveled the score for Penarol in the 18th minute.

Midfielder Jonathan Urretaviscaya beat Fenix goalkeeper Danilo Lerda in the 47th minute to give Penarol the win and effectively the championship.

Fenix accelerated their pursuit for an equalizer when Marcelo Sosa reduced Penarol to 10 men in the 73rd minute. Penarol, though, remained steadfast in their defense and almost increased their lead.

Even though he had just entered the field four minutes earlier, Fernando Ruocco was dismissed for Fenix in the 84th minute for committing his second bookable offense.

In other games, Tacuarembo defeated Racing 2-0, and Cerro Largo and River Plate tied 2-2.
