Only a victory separates Argentina from the Clausura
After overcoming Independiente 4-3 in a thrilling Clausura final match on Sunday, Argentinos Juniors are only one victory away from capturing their first Argentine championship in 25 years. La Paternal moved ahead of Estudiantes by one point in the rankings with 38 points, thanks to the win and Estudiantes’ surprising goalless draw with Rosario Central.
Diego Maradona’s former club, Argentinos, where he made his professional debut a number of years ago, last won the league title in the 1984–85 campaign. They will be declared champions once more if they defeat Huracan the following Sunday.
After falling behind 3-1 in the 66th minute, Nicolas Pavlovich of Argentina made it 3-2 in the 74th, and Juan Sabia tied the score in the last minute of regulation. Martin Carruzo scored the game-winning goal for Argentina in the third minute of stoppage time to cap a thrilling turn of events.
It was Pavlovich who had put Argentinos ahead in the 26th minute, however, two goals from Leonel Nunez and another from Dario Gandin turned the game in Independiente’s favour, before Argentinos’ memorable turn-around.
In a concurrent game, relegation-threatened Rosario Central held Estudiantes de La Plata to a painful 0-0 draw, denying them the chance to close in on the championship.
Even though Estudiantes entered the game as the clear favorites, they fared far worse than they should have and were significantly hindered by Juan Sebastian Veron’s early dismissal for elbowing Martin Rivero during a midfield duel.
Los Pincharratas will triumph if Estudiantes defeat Colon de Santa Fe next week while operating without captain Veron and Argentinos fall short against Huracan.
Banfield defeated Tigre 2-1 in the other games played on Sunday, and Atletico Tucuman and Arsenal de Sarandi were held to a 1-1 draw.
Huracan defeated Boca Juniors 2-1 in Nicolas Gaitan’s farewell match for the team before leaving for Portuguese champions Benfica, disappointing the fans of the team even more. Additionally, it could have been Juan Roman Riquelme’s final contest at Bombonera.
On Saturday, Uruguayan striker Rodrigo Lopez scored all four goals as Velez Sarsfield trounced Chacarita Juniors 4-1. Funes Mori converted a first-half hat-trick in River Plate’s 3-0 win over Racing Club, while Mauro Formica scored twice as Newell’s Old Boys thumped Gimnasia La Plata 6-0.
