Copa Libertadores: Cruzeiro is shocked by Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is on track to advance to the semifinals.

Wednesday’s opening leg of the all-Brazilian Copa Libertadores quarterfinal matchup in Belo Horizonte saw Sao Paulo stun Cruzeiro with a 2-0 victory. A significant victory by the Tricolor Paulista puts them in a strong position to proceed to the competition’s semifinals before the second leg at the Morumbi stadium the following week.

In the 24th minute, Dagoberto scored Sao Paulo’s first goal by poking the ball home after receiving a low cross from Marlos’ right flank.

Key player for Sao Paulo Hernanes scored the team’s second goal of the game in the 66th minute by slipping the ball past Cruzeiro goalie Fabio while unmarked in the box.

Cruzeiro attempted to recover after Sao Paulo’s opening goal but had little luck. First, a goal by Thiago Ribeiro was disallowed for questionable offside, and then a shot by Roger struck both posts before being cleared by the Sao Paulo defense.

At the Maracana stadium, Universidad de Chile defeated Flamengo 3-2 in another unexpected outcome.

In the fifth minute, the Chileans took the lead when Uruguayan defender Mauricio Victorino smashed the ball into the goal following a terrible mistake by the Flamengo defense.

In the 25th minute, Rafael Olarra gave la ‘U’ a second goal, shocking the 72,000 spectators.

Flamengo’s Adriano scored a strong header to draw a goal back in the 40th minute, but despite being down a man, another Uruguayan, Alvaro Fernandez, scored Santiago’s third goal when he finished off Jorge Rojas’ left-wing cross.

In the final minute of regulation, Juan added a second goal for Flamengo with a long shot that bounced past Miguel Pinto in the Chilean goal. With the return leg coming up the following week, the strike gave Flamengo new hope of winning.
