The Uruguayan title will be decided by Nacional & Penarol.
In the most recent iteration of the Uruguayan “Clasico,” the league championship will be decided on Wednesday night at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo between South American heavyweights Nacional and Penarol, two of Uruguay’s most successful clubs. There is a lot of anticipation in the capital of Uruguay because the match’s tickets are all sold out.
Due to their spotless record during the whole season, Penarol, who was just declared champions of the Uruguayan Clausura tournament that ended two weeks ago, are the favorites to win the competition. Nacional was the only team Penarol couldn’t defeat; the derby finished in a scoreless stalemate.
Penarol will win the championship if they win on Wednesday, but Nacional has to defeat Penarol to force two more games. Nacional’s victory in the Apertura tournament the previous season guaranteed them a spot in the championship game.
The game on Wednesday needs to have a winner; if it does, two halves of extra time will be conducted. But if the score is still tied, penalties will be used to select the winner.
If Penarol triumphs, it will be their first national title in six years.
Due to the overwhelming demand for the final, all 53,000 tickets made available to the general public have already been sold. The storied Centenario stadium is planned to hold over 60,000 spectators.
The game begins at 20:30, and Jorge Larrionda will serve as the referee.
