Brazil jubilates after crushing Chile
Brazil defeated Chile 3-0 to secure a quarterfinal matchup with the Netherlands and maintain their record-tying bid for a record sixth World Cup victory. With great goals, Juan, Luis Fabiano, and Robinho gave Brazil a resounding win.
Brazilian defender Juan gave his team the advantage in the 34th minute with a forceful header from a Maicon corner kick. Four minutes later, Luis Fabiano doubled Brazil’s advantage by receiving a one-touch pass from Kaka, rounding Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, and slotting the ball into an empty net.
In the 59th minute, Robinho finished off the rout by putting the ball in the back of the goal from the edge of the area after receiving a pass from Ramires in the middle of the field. In Brazil’s previous six games against Chile, Robinho scored seven goals.
Brazil’s 54,000 supporters in Johannesburg expected them to keep up the pressure, but even though they generated many more scoring opportunities, they could not score a fourth.
One of the most well-liked managers in South America, Marcelo Bielsa, drove his team forward to get a goal back, but although coming near, they were unable to beat Julio Cesar in the Brazilian goal.
In the round of 16 of the 1998 World Cup in France, Brazil similarly eliminated Chile, this time winning the game 4-1. In the game, both Ronaldo and Cesar Sampaio scored twice apiece.
Dunga’s team showed that they are one of the strongest in the tournament, and together with Argentina’s bitter rivals Germany and Spain, they are real World Cup hopefuls.
Brazil will now face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, who earlier on Monday defeated Slovakia 2-1. The Netherlands hasn’t defeated Brazil in 36 years.
