With a 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors on Sunday at the Bombonera stadium, Rosario Central ended a 20-year drought of Boca Juniors victories. Although Boca performed poorly, they appeared to be on track to get a draw until goalkeeper Javier Garcia made a careless error in the final five minutes, allowing a ridiculous goal. Juan Roman Riquelme, the playmaker for Boca, was dismissed in the last minutes, which made matters worse.
The contest was a reflection of the circumstances both teams had encountered this season. Boca was lethargic and ponderous, while Central passed quite erratically.
The game started to open up after the first half, with Central producing the better scoring possibilities. After the Boca defense lost focus, Adrian de Leon gave them the lead two minutes before halftime.
Boca entered the second half with a fresh mindset and looked to draw even. A powerful Riquelme shot was parried by Hernan Galindez in the 60th minute, and striker Nicolas Gaitan buried the rebound.
Everything seemed to trend to a draw, but with five minutes left in the game, Milton Caraglio headed the ball into an open net to give the visitors the victory. Garcia, the goalie for Boca, made a mistake in his timing as he attempted to grab a cross and is mostly to blame for the goal.
After Central’s score, Riquelme was ultimately given the boot for verbally insulting match official Rafael Furchi.
Consequently, Boca is now ranked 18th overall with 11 points, one point ahead of Rosario Central in position 19.
Sebastian Blanco’s goal in the first half helped Lanus defeat River Plate 1-0 in the late game on Sunday. Ariel Ortega will rejoin the River team for their match against Newell’s Old Boys on Wednesday, according to manager Leonardo Astrada, who announced the game.
After defeating Arsenal de Sarandi 1-0 on Saturday, Independiente is still in contention for the championship. Leonel Nunez scored the game-winning goal for Independiente in the opening frame. The Red Devils are in first place with 27 points, five points ahead of Argentinos Juniors in second.
After his San Lorenzo team lost at home to Gimnasia La Plata, sending the Ciclon to the 17th position, Diego Simeone announced his resignation. As the club’s temporary manager, Sebastian Mendez will oversee the Buenos Aires team through the remainder of the campaign.
In other games, Godoy Cruz stunned Velez Sarsfield with a 2-0 victory while Estudiantes and Banfield battled to a 1-1 draw.
