After defeating Rodolfo D’Onofrio by six votes, Daniel Passarella was officially named the new president of the Argentine powerhouse River Plate ( 5,298 to 5,292). D’Onofrio initially seemed to have the most votes, but Passarella won after the ballots were revised.
Passarella informed Telam, “See, I was right. We must applaud River’s supporters and members for the responsibilities they took on and for participating so actively in a historic election.
Passarella twice helped Argentina win the World Cup. He played with River Plate from 1974 to 1982 and then again from 1988 to 1989. In addition, he served the club as a coach twice.
Early on Sunday morning, Domingo Diaz, the head of the election commission, declared Passarella the victor.
Passarrella is the new president, he won by six votes, and this is official, he declared. “The revision of the ballots has concluded, there’s no turning back now.”
The other candidates received the following totals/percentages of votes: Antonio Caselli received 19.42% of the total votes (2,765), Daniel Kiper received 3.15 percent (448 votes), and Mariano Mera Figueroa received 3.03 percent (431 votes).
On December 14, Passarella will take over as the club’s president, succeeding Jose Maria Aguilar.
