Kleber, a highly regarded Brazilian forward, has extended his contract with Cruzeiro for another year and will continue with the Belo Horizonte powerhouses through February 2015. Kleber had drawn the notice of several elite European teams, but he decided that it would be in his best interests to stay in Brazil and support Cruzeiro in their pursuit of the Copa Libertadores.
Fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras had hoped to bank on the player’s return, but they were left with little choice because Kleber would stay at Cruzeiro until he is moved to a European team.
“Kleber claims that Cruzeiro did not benefit from Palmeiras’ proposition, although he did. The player’s agent, Giuseppe Dioguardi, stated that the directors of the two clubs were unable to reach a consensus.
Kleber left for Portugal at the end of January to sign with FC Porto, but Cruzeiro and Porto were unable to reach an agreement, therefore Kleber had to return to Brazil.
Cruzeiro defeated Real Potosi 7-0, and Kleber, 26, scored once as a consequence. This victory earned Cruzeiro a spot in the 2010 Copa Libertadores group stage.
