Cerro Porteno makes it to the quarterfinals


Despite losing to Goias 3-1 in Brazil on Thursday, Cerro Porteno advanced to the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals. After winning 2-0 at Asuncion the previous week, the Paraguayans advanced thanks to the away goals rule.


Goias got out to a fast start, and Felipe’s goal just before halftime gave them the lead. The attacker successfully beat Cerro Porteno goalie Diego Barreto after receiving a beautiful pass from Leandro Eusebio.


Five minutes later, though, Goias were down to 10 men after Everton was given a second caution. The Brazilians appeared to be impacted by the numerical disparity.


After the intermission, the Paraguayans stepped up their play, and in the 68th minute Carlos Ariel Recalde equalized the score. It ended up being a crucial away goal.


But two minutes later, Felipe’s outstanding single effort gave Goias the advantage once more.


Leo Lima then connected with a well placed cross from Joao Paulo to give the Brazilians a 3-1 lead in the 79th minute. After the goal, the 16,000 loud spectators at the Serra Dourada stadium were roaring with excitement.


Goias attempted to outnumber Cerro Porteno with a fourth goal that would advance them, but while coming extremely near, they were unable to add to their tally.


After holding Lanus to a 1-1 draw in Argentina, Liga de Quito won the match 5-1 overall and advanced to the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals.


Claudio Bieler, an Argentine striker, gave Liga the lead in the 70th minute, but Santiago Salcedo tied the score for Lanus five minutes later.
