Before the 2010 World Cup, Paraguay had a harsh reality check as they were defeated 2-0 by Qatar in a friendly game played in Rouen, France. Los Guaranies played poorly and were defeated after giving up two goals in the second half.
It was Paraguay’s second straight loss following World Cup qualification. In their opening match, they fell to Chile 2-1.
Roque Santa Cruz of Manchester City, who missed the final eight rounds of the South American World Cup qualifiers due to a knee injury, was back for the game, but he couldn’t save his team from a loss.
Fabio Cesar Montesin, a striker of Brazilian descent, gave Qatar the lead in the fifth minute with a close-range goal after another effort had struck the post.
Montesin put the game out of Paraguay’s grasp nine minutes before the end when he scorched a spectacular free-kick past Aldo Bobadilla.
