Cerro Porteno defeated Olimpia 2-1 in the 17th round of the Paraguayan Clausura championship despite playing several reserves.
Martin Liguera, an Uruguayan midfielder, gave Olimpia the lead in the 21st minute, but Jorge Nunez tied the score for Cerro Porteno in the 34th. When he scored in the 75th minute, Argentine attacker Roberto Nanni gave El Ciclon the victory. Cerro held onto the victory despite having two players dismissed in the final fifteen minutes.
To prepare for Wednesday’s Copa Sudamericana semifinal against Fluminense of Brazil, Cerro Porteno rested the majority of their first team. Following the outcome of the first leg in Asuncion, the Paraguayans are down 1-0.
Guarani defeated league-leading Libertad 3-1 for just their fourth defeat in 17 games, and second-placed Nacional fell to 12 de Octubre 2-0. Third-placed Rubio Nu also defeated Tacuary by a score of 2-0.
Other games saw Sportivo Luqueno defeat 2 de Mayo by a score of 2-1 and 3 de Febrero triumph over Sol de America by the same margin.
With 38 championships, Olimpia is the most successful club in the Paraguayan league. Cerro Porteno and Libertad follow them, with 29 and 14 respectively.
