Markarian is still interested in leading Peru’s national squad

The national squad of Peru might be coached by Sergio Markarian.

Regarding the 2011 Copa America and the 2014 South American World Cup qualifications, Uruguayan coach Sergio Markarian stated that Peruvian football “had grown” recently. As a result, he offered the option of agreeing to coach Peru’s national team.

Markarian reversed his commitment to only accept the Uruguayan national team job, adding that “nothing has been discarded” if he were to receive an offer from the Peruvian national team. His statements were reported today by Lima daily El Comercio.

The coach, well-known to Peruvian supporters due to the titles he won with Universitario de Deportes and the Copa Libertadores runners-up medal he won with Sporting Cristal in 1997, signaled, “Nothing has been abandoned in connection to coaching Peru.”

Markarian, who now serves as the head coach of Uruguayan club Danubio, has repeatedly turned down offers to become the nation of Peru’s head coach.

According to the coach, the advancement of Peruvian football is evidenced by the qualifying of Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima to the round of 16 stages of the current Copa Libertadores.

“The Peruvian league has dramatically improved, and I can attest to this based on the games I have watched on television. Teams like Juan Aurich, San Martin, Cesar Vallejo, and Cristal today demonstrate how far things have come.

The Peruvian football association is keen to recruit an experienced coach in light of Peru’s dismal performance in the 2010 South American World Cup qualifiers. Along with Markarian, contenders for the job include the Argentines Jose Pekerman and Gustavo Costas, the Uruguayans Anibal Ruiz and Luis Fernando Suarez, as well as the local coach Juan Reynoso.
