Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel of the New York Red Bulls said it would be a dream come true to play again for Argentine powerhouses River Plate in the future during the opening of his own futsal sports center in Bogota. Angel’s return to Los Millonarios has been suggested, and given that River is looking for a seasoned striker, it may happen.
Angel, 34, recalls his time at River with affection and calls it the happiest period of his professional life. Angel scored 62 goals in 132 games over his four years at River, helping the team win two national titles.
Please don’t retire me yet, Angel jokingly pleaded. “One constantly wonders about going back to Nacional de Medellin, [his first club], or River. I’ll always be appreciative of what those clubs and Aston Villa offered me.
Angel feels he is still the player he was in England and that he is wanting to be given a larger challenge than MLS can offer before declaring his retirement. On the weekend, Angel scored twice as the Red Bulls defeated Dallas FC 2-1.
Numerous teams in Latin America have recently expressed interest in Angel; most of them are from Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. Angel has previously said that he is willing to consider suggestions.
Looking ahead to the 2011 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup qualifications, Angel is convinced that leaving Major League Soccer will also increase his prospects of joining the Colombian national squad.
