I deserve an opportunity with the national team, Uruguay Salvador Silva

The Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva of Velez Sarsfield told the Argentine media that he hopes to play in the 2010 World Cup with his country, but he will have to settle for watching it on television. Since moving back to Velez from Banfield, a team he helped win the Argentine league for the first time in 113 years by finishing as the league’s leading scorer, Silva has maintained his remarkable goal-scoring pace.

Silva, who is 29 years old, has scored five goals in the Argentine Clausura championship this year, but Oscar Tabarez has never selected him for the Uruguayan national team. He told Radio La Red that he is deserving of a spot on Uruguay’s team.

“I did what I had to do, and I believe that I deserved the chance to play for my country’s national team. But now I’ll keep giving Velez my all,” Silva said.

I was eagerly anticipating an opportunity that never materialized, he continued.

Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez were Tabarez’s favoured offensive duo throughout the World Cup qualifying matches, with Edison Cavani, Sebastian Abreu, and Sebastian Fernandez frequently called upon as backups.

Like Silva, a number of Uruguayan attackers are pushing for a spot in the assault. Others include Antonio Pacheco, Gonzalo Castro, Walter Pandiani, Rodrigo Lopez, and even Joaquin Boghossian.
