After a swift counterattack in the sixth minute, Argentine striker Martin Martinuccio gave Diego Aguirre’s team the lead. Cerrito had little time to settle into their game.
A penalty kick was awarded to Cerrito in the 33rd minute as compensation for their persistent search for an equalizer. Alberto Acosta, a former Penarol forward, executed flawlessly.
Cerrito’s happiness, however, was short-lived as Antonio Pacheco, the league’s top scorer, gave Penarol the lead once less than a minute later.
Penarol thoroughly controlled the second half and generated many chances to widen their lead.
In the last seconds of the second half, Penarol’s substitute Diego Alonso secured three points for his team.
One week before playing their bitter rivals Nacional in the Uruguayan Clasico, Penarol will claim the championship if they defeat second-placed Fenix the following week. On Saturday, Fenix overcame a deficit to defeat Danubio 2-1.
The other major team in Uruguay, Nacional, suffered an upset 1-0 loss to Rampla Juniors. Despite having an additional player on the field as of the 40th minute, Nacional’s assault lacked creativity, thereby handing the championship to Penarol.
Other games included Cerro’s 5-1 victory over Liverpool, Wanderers’ 7-1 thrashing of Cerro Largo, and River Plate’s 3-1 triumph against Tacuarembo.
